Island Bio-Social & Empowerment Project

DESCRIPTION DU PROJET

Island Bio is a social and non-for-profit organisation that works to brings social, health and environmental justice to deprived communities in Mauritius. The beneficiaries [be they illiterates, ex-drug addicts, ex-convicts, single moms, etc.]  are subject to a 3-year empowerment and capacity building program as well as inner  change  through art therapy, self-leadership and one-on-one coaching. Then training and support on permaculture and agro-ecology is provided. Then after sometime, the beneficiaries are empowered on management, community working and marketing techniques.

Community gardening allows the participants to interact with others while providing mutual support and creating social networking. Island Bio community gardens are places where joy, hope, resilience and support can be lived, felt and expressed. These are also “safe zones” for  the beneficiaries’ children and their friends as they work in the community gardens after school hours and during school holidays thus creating a bond between the parents and their children who are kept away from the streets’ evils.

Our Philosophy: We believe that quality organic food freshly and sourced from the community gardens is the right of each and every citizen of Mauritius.  The prices of the vegetables sold are as low as the conventional market and are greatly impacting on the health of our Mauritian community as it has been proven that inland cancer rate is higher and fatal among the lower-class citizens.

Our Open Air Supermarkets: Island Bio are also lifting and opening the way to a better world through a long-term farming “re-branding” exercise to put forward the beneficiaries who are working in those Open Air  Supermarkets (OAS) [community gardens].

Island Bio is not taking any sale commission on beneficiaries turnover and our interventions on our sites at Baie du Tombeau, Chamarel, Cité la Cure are free and is relying on our sponsors to be able to move forward to a better world…
