About Us

Shoals Rodrigues is a small marine non-profit conservation organisation in Rodrigues, Republic of Mauritius. A small team of local scientists, educators, and divers drives the organisation. Our work is supported and overseen by a board and advisory team. Shoals Rodrigues has been a pioneer and leading voice for marine conservation on the island. The organisation was established in 2001 and has since built a strong track record of scientific, conservation and education successes with support from numerous funders, and partners including the local government.

OBJECTIFS

  1. Promote marine environmental awareness
  2. Undertake research on our marine ecosystems and fisheries for sustainable resource management and conservation
  3. Provide training in practical techniques to ensure local people can study and monitor their shore, lagoon, and reef habitats.
  4. Advocating with the local Government for effective conservation management strategies.

Key Initiatives:

  1. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): Establishing and advocating for the creation of MPAs to conserve critical habitats and species.
  2. Marine Biodiversity: Understanding and tracking changes within the marine environment and undertaking coral reef restoration.
  3. Sustainable Fisheries: Promoting sustainable fishing practices and supporting fisheries management efforts to ensure the long-term viability of fish stocks.
  4. Community support: Developing resilience through community-based projects such as establishing alternative livelihoods and training with a focus on marginalised and impacted communities
  5. Club Mer Programme; Promoting the marine environment through an engaging initiative for young people, aged 14 to 21.
  6. Coastal Cleanups: Organising clean-up campaigns and initiatives to reduce and remove marine debris and plastic pollution.
